INTERNATIONAL WEB HOSTS
Doing business in South Korea presents a variety of its own unique challenges. Companies must comply with the country's Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Security, which, among other measures, prohibits illegal disclosure, alteration and deletion of information, and requires the reporting of human, organizational and budgetary plans to ensure a stable, secure network.
Still, to see the Asian market in the early stages of embracing Web hosting, as a service and as a business, is fascinating, industry leaders say, much like going back in time and watching hosting in the US take off in its pioneer days.
"In China, you will be riding down a smooth, well-marked freeway only to find your 'exit' is just a gap in the guard rail leading to a gravel road," Aaxis Technologies' Getner says. "When you arrive you will find yourself at an imposing, modern data center, complete with military guards, only to find racks of Windows servers installed with every port open and nary a firewall on the premise. In many ways, China's Web development is mirroring the garage startups of the 1990s here in the US. There is a mad rush to get more capability and functionality online, with the understanding that someone will come around later to tighten up all the infrastructure."
